Ukraine war: President Trump said the United States would help Europe send more weapons to Ukraine and warned that Russia would be hit by “very severe tariffs” if there was no peace deal with Ukraine in 50 days. Mr. Trump’s remarks came as he met at the White House with NATO’s secretary general, Mark Rutte, who has been coordinating European efforts to send Ukraine more weapons to defend itself against Russia’s invasion. Under the arrangement, NATO would buy American weapons and pass them to Kyiv. The tariff threat could have minimal impact on Moscow because Russia sells very little to the United States, but Mr. Trump also threatened to punish its trading partners with secondary sanctions.
China report: Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee were set to release a report on Monday that accuses the Trump administration of ceding global influence to China. Tariff fallout: The European Union’s trade commissioner, Maros Sefcovic, warned that Mr. Trump risked upending trans-Atlantic trade if he followed through on his threat to impose a 30 percent tariff on goods from the bloc starting Aug. 1. He voiced frustration before a meeting of trade ministers in Brussels, saying he felt the two sides had been “very close to an agreement.” Read more ›
